Natural citrine is relatively rare and is a yellow to orange variety of quartz, while most citrine on the market is actually heat treated amethyst. Amethyst and Citrine both start their journey deep within the Earth, forming within geodes under conditions of high temperature and pressure.
There is a misconception that heat-treated citrine is 'fake.' While it is not natural citrine, it is still genuine quartz. The term 'fake' may incorrectly infer synthetic manufacture, which is not the case; heat treatment is simply a method of altering the color of natural amethyst.
Much of the commercial Citrine on the market is heat-treated Amethyst or Smoky Quartz that produces an enhanced Citrine color, usually a deeper amber or orange-reddish shade, with natural Citrine being a pale yellow color.
